Got Thoughts? Sound Familiar?
"A mother should do anything to save her child, so shouldn't say no."
"A mother gives all so her child knows they are loved (even when it causes pain and exhaustion)."
"A mother is only as happy as her most struggling child, so don't say no".
"If I say no, my child won't get better, won't know I love them, will distance from me, I'll lose them."
"It's selfish to say no".
"It's easier to say yes to prevent escalated anger or problems".
There's lots of beliefs about what a mother is and what a mother does, and what she should and shouldn't do. It's no wonder boundaries are misunderstood and therefore harder to create, much less live.
This is why it matters that you question the thoughts, that when believed, can really add to more stress, confusion, and conflict. Because those beliefs might not be whole truth. When not in truth, you say yes when you really want to say no.
Boundaries matter because you matter! Boundaries matter because they can save the relationship with your child, and simplify your next steps when things so sideways. And, we know that things can go sideways.
Loving from a place of peace (not fear) can solve a whole lot of stress and confusion!
“Your child does drugs and you get your hit by believing the horror movies in your head. I did this Work and set myself free. And it was so attractive to my daughter that she ended up setting herself free.”
~ Byron Katie
Welcome, I'm Joanne
Hello to you, my fellow courageous mom. I'm Joanne Richards, mom of a child who struggles with substance use and mental health issues. I'm also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Facilitator of The Work of Byron Katie, Certified Grief Educator, with a Certification in The Invitation to Change and Trauma Sensitive Heart Math. I've earned a broad personal and professional perspective of loving a child through addiction.
I believe that unless and until we do our own healing, we will remain in a cycle of suffering. I have caused more difficulty, estrangement, and increased struggle because I just didn't know or wasn't doing enough for my inner peace. Much of it was preventable. Of course, I didn't do it deliberately, I did it because of fear, lack of knowledge and skills.
Fear is the number one contributing factor that causes so many preventable problems. That's why I really want to support moms through the hard stuff with expert coaching, meaningful discussion, and doable skill building within a safe, supportive, and understanding community of other moms, to be informed and have a treasure box of tools to make the hard easier.

Introducing The Fear-Less Mom
What if peace is possible even when your child is struggling?
Welcome to a 6-week inner adventure for cultivating a healing mindset when your child struggles with substance use or addiction. Whether you are new to your circumstances or have been at it a while, whether you've done The Work or not, you have a home here in a community of heart-centered moms who know there is a kinder way to meet addiction and their child, as is.
We practice The Work of Byron Katie, a simple process of self-inquiry that helps us identify and question the thoughts that cause stress, anxiety, conflict, and self-doubt.
The heartbeat of our journey is a powerful mindset tool called The Work of Byron Katie. Through this process of meditative inquiry, we will identify, question, and shift painful BS (belief systems) around all stressful aspects of cancer.
Discover the ways in which this condition is happening for you, not to you. Invite it in as a teacher, a gift, and a catalyst for transformation and self-growth. Plus we “sick people” tend to have a lot of laughter and fun!
