Family Recovery Coaching is for those who are experiencing distress due to a loved one’s Substance Use Disorder/Addiction. It is natural for family to focus on the loved one. However, it can be ineffective and very stressful to focus entirely on the one with Substance Use Disorder/Addiction and not include yourself, especially when they're not choosing or changing in the ways you would like. That kind of focus could actually prolong and contribute to the insanity. That does not mean that you’re helpless or powerless. On the contrary. It can be the invitation to seek help that helps both you and your loved one. If you're reading this, maybe you're at that place to seek ... and find. Because you do have power and you can help.
Family Recovery can help you to meet the circumstances and fears as they are, and learn ways to take yourself off the roller coaster. We talk about letting go but how in the world do we do that? That is part of coaching – to empower you through education about addiction, by developing skills and practicing effective communication that can lead to transformation ~ beginning with you. You have a lot of love to share. Love, shared with education, tools and skills makes you a powerful influence so you're sharing possibilities, and contributing to recovery.
Family Recovery Coaching is a partnership. As your coach, I walk alongside you to design ways and identify the choices that help you get your life back regardless of your loved one’s choices. In this way, you can be your loved one’s best chance at recovery. You can learn how to make healthier choices that can contribute to your loved one’s recovery rather than their addiction. Coaching is not therapy or analysis. Coaching is goal oriented so you can move forward and achieve positive results.
You are whole and resourceful, yes even if or when you may not feel like it. As coach, I listen deeply and provide support to illuminate your wisdom and activate your resourcefulness. The collaboration in coaching is designed to prepare a unique path that feels doable and right for you. It is designed to establish a strong foundation for you to meet the challenges of loving someone through their addiction and connecting with them in a loving and skillful way. When you have that foundation, letting go becomes part of a natural process without giving up or giving in. By developing new ways to meet old problems, by putting new thought and behaviors into action, you can make a difference in your own life, and potentially in your loved one’s life too. Good news is that as you change, the world changes.

Research shows that when the family heals, the family becomes the best chance for the loved one to choose their own healing and recovery. Only one person needs to begin this process. I invite you to be that one.
"I just returned from an immersion family recovery weekend with Joanne Richards as our guide. Wow. I am so grateful. My husband even came. It’s nice finally in our 13 year journey with our daughter to begin getting on the same page❤️. I learned so many new strategies for communication that will help me not just with my daughter but with everyone around me. How to stay out of the fear and be in the present. Gifts of self care. Compassion for my daughter and my family. Truly a shift in thinking and reacting. I'm excited to continue this path and start practicing my new tools." ~ Kathleen
“The BALM training is so valuable…. In fact all of what you are teaching me is so valuable and I used the conversational techniques of just bringing up the facts as I see them in family therapy with my son last week. It was so empowering and grounding. I didn’t react or get emotional, I felt balanced and clear.” ~ Barbara
